Abstract Damages due to fire occurred on many monuments and affected building sandstones. Changes in technical properties of heated sandstones are caused by changes their structure mineralogy. Therefore, a better knowledge the changing processes grain size scale is crucial understand assess property changes. The study presents results for Cotta type Elbe Sandstone, clay-bearing sandstone that widespread material construction sculpting. Uniaxial compressive strength ultrasonic wave velocity as well colour, structures mineralogical phases were determined samples treated at temperatures 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 1250 °C compared untreated material. show minor clay components pores determine uniaxial dependence temperature dry or wet state. does not decrease even high temperatures, whereas decreasing continuously with higher other differing mechanical behaviour can be explained phase kaolinite pore cement.
